![]() What does the title “Brave” mean? The bravest action in this movie is King Fergus fighting Mor’du at the beginning. ![]() The chad King Fergus fights the bear whilst the virgin Queen Elinor runs away with Merida.Īnyway, after this we get the title card and a time skip to when Merida is a young lady. Merida goes back to her family who are then attacked by the bear Mor’du, the worst Pixar villain. They catch fish and fight a bear one time and suddenly they’re close, they’re mother and daughter, did that really change their relationship more so than every other action they’ve had together previously? In my head canon Elinor is just scared Merida will turn her into a bear again if she pisses her off so she pretends to be progressive now.Īnyway, back to the plot, Merida goes to pick up the arrows she fired and discovers a wisp. Queen Elinor is annoying, her arc is learning to allow her daughter to make her own decisions but it feels so forced. King Fergus is great, all my homies love King Fergus. Queen Elinor is the one who wants Merida to conform to her gender role, not King Fergus. King Fergus doesn’t care about Merida’s gender, he encourages her to get good with a bow, is genuinely interested in her story about climbing a mountain, see’s no problem with her stuffing her face with food, and seems just as uninterested in the whole arranged marriage ordeal as Merida is. Instead they write him as someone who believes these masculine traits can be enjoyed by anyone. King Fergus is the definition of a masculine stereotype, he loves hunting, the glory of war, fighting, he’s kind of a slob, he’s boastful of his accomplishments, in any other movie he would be the one holding Merida back, the one who wants her to be a archetypal “lady”. It’s the only consistently enjoyable thing throughout. King Fergus and his relation to gender roles is the best thing in this movie by far. Merida is given a bow by her father King Fergus and starts practicing. The movie starts with Queen Elinor playing with her daughter Merida. Ok, as I’ve stopped doing spoiler-free sections to these Pixar reviews unless they’re new imma start with the plot, this will probably be shorter than usual because nothing happens in this movie. We could have had Sean Connery, Karen Gillan, Ewan McGregor, James McAvoy, Shirley Henderson, Lindsay Duncan, David Tennant, Peter Capaldi, but nah we got some bad Scottish accents instead. Give us an all Scottish cast you cowards. I find it funny that only half of the cast is Scottish and the other half are English because I guess Pixar doesn’t know the difference between Scotland and England. Kelly Macdonald played Merida, Billy Connolly played the best character, King Fergus, Emma Thompson played Queen Elinor, and Julie Walters played the witch. The movie has some star power behind it as well. It was her vision which was then mismanaged by those left to work on the film. Holy shit there is actual talent behind this project so why did it end up like it did? Well troubled development, Brenda Chapman was removed from the project halfway through for unknown reasons. Those three are also the writers of the film and they are joined by Irene Mecchi who is best known for writing the screenplay for The Lion King. Brenda Chapman, she directed The Prince of Egypt which is one of, if not the best DreamWorks movie ever made, Mark Andrews, who is one of the few Pixar directors to make one film and then get outta there, that or nobody was impressed with his work so they politely showed him the exit, and Steve Purcell, the only other Pixar thing he directed was “Toy Story That Time Forgot” but you might know him as the creator of the Sam and Max franchise which is pretty cool, he’s clearly really talented. I wish I was reviewing that instead of this mediocre movie but I guess when I set out to review every Pixar movie I knew what I was getting into.īrave was directed by three directors. Ladybird does everything Brave tries to do but does it well. If you want a movie focusing on a mother / daughter relationship where the daughter is a redhead (I don’t know why that would be one of your requirements but you do you I guess) then watch Ladybird, not Brave. A movie that focuses on tradition versus modernism through the lens of a mother / daughter relationship could have been great but Brave barely delivers any of what it seeks out to present. I remembered Brave being at least halfway decent which is what led me to be so disappointed.īrave has potential. How was rewatching Cars 2 less painful than rewatching Brave? Don’t get me wrong Brave is a better movie than Cars 2 but I knew exactly what I was getting into with Cars 2, I couldn’t be disappointed by it because I didn’t expect anything from it.
